Journaling for Beginners: Start Small and Make It Your Own

A blank page can feel like a big commitment. Your first journal entry can be just a few lines.

Begin with a purpose

Decide what you want to capture: everyday memories, ideas, gratitude, or plans. Choose a notebook and pen you enjoy, or use a digital format if that feels easier.

Keep your first entry simple

Write about your day, answer a prompt, or make a short list. You can also combine words with sketches and paper collage. Experiment until the page feels like yours.

Make room for a small routine

Try a few minutes alongside something you already do, such as your evening wind-down. Pick a realistic rhythm; daily entries are optional. Leave spelling, handwriting, and decoration imperfect.

When you feel stuck

Use a question to get started, shorten your writing session, or try another format. Occasionally reread older entries to notice what matters to you.

Your invitation: Open your journal today and write one thing you want to remember.

A brief summary in fresh wording, based on Masha Plans’ beginner journaling guide. Visit the original for the full discussion.
